54 years ago today as I write this, the Six Day War between Israel and her Arab neighbors was underway. In one of the most stunning military campaigns of the post-WW2 era, Israel confounded her adversaries and changed the course of history in the Middle East, establishing herself as a regional power to be reckoned with. While Israel has fought many engagements since that time, none have had the singular impact of that conflict…perhaps until now. The recent operations against Hamas in Gaza, known in Israel as “Operation Guardian of the Walls”, while not involving any seizure of new territory nor involving the totality of the IDF in the way that was seen in 1967, nonetheless may represent a watershed event in the history of modern Israel of no less significance. The parallels between the two wars are striking in terms of both the political and military dynamics of the confl
A recent article that appeared in the March 28 Wall Street Journal, “The Two Americas Have Grown Much Fiercer”, by Peggy Noonan, is part of an editorial trend of late decrying the divided state of America in these times. As is typical in these pieces, the author does not place the onus for our fractured state on one side or the other, but instead promotes a theme of “Can’t we all just get along?” From the point of view of the “Trumpian” camp, this writer is here to reply with a resounding “no”, at least not until the core issue that motivates the tens of millions of Americans who support our sitting President is addressed
for millions of voters in America today, the choice they make in the voting booth for the highest office in the land is a choice that is made in much the same way that a new pair of boots, a stylish shirt, or some decorative item for the home is chosen: what seems “cool”, what will impress their friends.
We can pay a lot now…or a lot more later
If a genie came out of a bottle and granted me three wishes, the first one would be that I could live in the alternate universe where McCain won in '08 and went on to get a second term. There are many reasons for this, but among the most important is that in all likelihood, the matter of the Iranian nuclear weapons program would have been long since dealt with in a decisive manner.
The recent massacre at the Charlie Hebdo publication in Paris struck an unusually profound chord among the French public. There had been other terrorist attacks in France, but with this particular incident, some four million Parisians took to the streets, a public demonstration of solidarity with the victims on a scale not seen since at least WW2. They were demonstrating in solidarity with….what?
This is a common sentiment among many commentators today: Obama ‘doesn’t care about foreign policy’. However, a closer look at his presidency would reveal quite the opposite. Obama cares more about foreign policy than anything else, so long as it relates to Israel. This focus of his on Israel, moreover, is hardly benign; here too, it is quite the opposite. Indeed, this writer would submit that Obama’s intention to weaken our ally, Israel, is the central feature of his presidency.
Israel has to hit Iran. Soon. Very soon. There is simply no choice…and time is running out.
So, be of good cheer. Because our enemies are for the most part dumb, dishonest, and lazy, and our friends – like us – are the people who really do things. And with friends like that, we can't lose!
